// Should you be on Facebook?
I see a lot of businesses on Facebook and to be honest some of them are knocking it out of the park. Unfortunately, the others (which make up the vast majority), are ‘on Facebook’ but that’s about it…
To me the issue here is clear. When I ask people “why are you on Facebook?” the answer is either :
“A marketing ‘guru’ told me to do it”
“My competitors on there, so I thought I should be too”.
Essentially, Facebook (and social media in general) is just the same as any other marketing channel – if you put time and effort in and persevere it will pay off! However, just like any other marketing channel, if you don’t do it right you will be wasting valuable time and resources that could be better utilised elsewhere.
At the end of the day, its all about the opportunity cost.
Before you take your business on Facebook consider this:
Why are you doing it?
Seriously, Facebook is not the only place to interact with your client base and community – there are lots of other options out there (Twitter, LinkedIn, Forums, Newsletters, Blogs). Have you considered them all?
Who will be posting the content?
Brand identity is often overlooked when dealing with Facebook. You need to ensure the content you are posting has a consistent tone of voice and meets your Brand Identity.
Consistency is key!
Do you have a plan for malicious posts?
One thing I can be certain of, is this will happen to everyone, eventually.
I can’t stress how important this is. You need to have a plan in place before you start, not scramble around when something happens. The best way to resolve any customer service issues or complaints is quickly and professionally.
Don’t forget – Social media never sleeps and malicious comments can be made outside of business hours!
So…do you still think you should be on Facebook?
